MIKE FORD COULD SWITCH TO LEAGUE

DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: Rugby union's Mike Ford could make the switch to league
22nd November 2009

By Neil Fissler

MIKE FORD is set to lose his job in one code but could make an immediate comeback in another – as boss of the England rugby league team.

Ford has been defence coach of the England rugby union team since May 2006 but is set to be axed as part of a planned shake-up of Martin Johnson’s back-room team.

Johnson and RFU king makers will start the review within the next couple of weeks and the results will be released before Christmas.

The former Great Britain scrum half has however emerged as the favourite to succeed Tony Smith in the 13-a-side code and the RFU won’t be standing in his way.

Ford has a one-year rolling contract, while Smith resigned as boss of the England league team last weekend.

Ford, 44, hasn’t worked in league for eight years but is still held in high regard following a long career which started at Wigan and finished at Oldham.

One potential problem for RFL bosses trying to tempt him back to the north would be the lack of international matches that are played in league.
