JOHNNO PINS HIS HOPES ON SHAW

ABOVE: Shaw is in line to face the All Blacks on Saturday
17th November 2009

By Iain Stewart

SIMON Shaw has been fast-tracked back to shore up under-fire England.

He is in line to face the All Blacks on Saturday in the wake of two poor performances by Martin Johnson’s side against Australia and Argentina.

The 36-year-old lock has proved his fitness in Wasps’ victories over the last two weekends and struggling England coach Johnson was quick to call him up.

Shaw was one of the stars of this summer’s Lions tour to South Africa and he would bring vital experience to the side.

Johnson’s position as team manager has been guaranteed by elite rugby director Rob Andrew until the 2011 World Cup but questions are being asked about the rest of the coaching team.

It is understood that England’s post-autumn review will see forwards coach John Wells on particularly shaky ground.

WALES boss Warren Gatland is set to name Scarlets’ 21-year-old centre Jonathan Davies in the side to face Argentina on Saturday.

Gatland names his team today, and is looking for a replacement for Cardiff Blues centre Tom Shanklin, who broke a bone in his nose in the 17-13 win over Samoa.
